Canon E18 Error Dialog
As you may already know, I have a lengthy page dedicated to the E18 error, with various remedies.
Due to the MANY comments I've received from Canon customers who have encountered the infamous E18 error, I decided to contact them regarding the problem, seeking an official explanation/response. The email dialog, as it unfolds, will be posted in the original entry.
Comments
Have you gotten anywhere with the E18 error and the following investigation?
I have that camera and just started receiving the MEMORY CARD ERROR about 2 months ago. I bought a 1GB card last month thinking it may be the card, now that card doesn't work at all.
Let me know if you have any updates on the Canon issues.
Thanks. Later.

I have the lens extended and can't get them to retract. Of course, the camera spits E18 whenever I try to start it. Seems i'm gonna have to dissect it :(

The camera is about 2 years old and I always have it in it's case and treat it with kid gloves. I went to turn it on today and the lens opened and it beeped fast about 6 times and I got the E18 message on the black screen. The message went away and the screen stays black and I tried to turned it off it wouldn't turn off but made a wierd grinding noise in a sequence of 3 times. I flipped the mode from camera to playback and the lens closed and the light went out.
So here I am about to read further. It's funny how I googled "Canon Power Shot A80 customer support help desk" and this website was about 7th down from the top of the page.
Anyone have any advice for me? Thanks.

I noticed all these posting regarding this E18 error message. I have a 2 megapixel Canon Powershot A60. It has been giving me this error message for quite some time. It is over 2 years old and out of warranty. All Canon offered me was repair services starting at $95.00+ or an upgrade offer for a 4 megapixel for $100.00 plus shipping. Why should I replace this camera at my cost? I am very dissappointed in Canon.

I too am experiencing the "E18" error on my 2 year old Cannon SD200. It had been working fine until suddenly the lens stopped retracting. After I turn it on and try the magnification lever it either shuts down or gives me E18 and shuts down. I tried all the remedies you posted but nothing helps. It's a shame Cannon doesn't want to do something about all the people that are having the same problem. It is also coincidental that after about 2 years they break down...right after the warranty expires!
