OT: Phone Songs

A while back I learned how to play Mary Had a Little Lamb on a phone. If you've never played music on your phone, give at least one of these a try:

OfficeMax Sucks: BBB Complaint

I had just about given up on the $50 that OM owes me when I remembered that I had never filed a BBB complaint. So, I took a few minutes, and complained away:

Date Received: 6/29/2004
Primary Complaint Classification: Credit or Billing Disputes
Secondary Complaint Classification: Selling Practices
Complaint:
Item was advertised for $150, but online the price in the system (when I ordered) was $200. I called to have the price adjusted, and the Customer Service Representative (CSR) informed me that I could expect a refund of $50 + tax ($54.24) to show on my credit card about 1 week later. When I later checked for the refund on my credit card company's website, it never showed. I contacted OfficeMax many times by phone and by letter to request the refund. The first few times I complained, I was told that they didn't know why I hadn't been credited, but that I would be. Later I was told they couldn't credit me the whole amount, but part of it. Later yet, I was told they wouldn't credit me anything. Their latest excuse is that because I used a coupon, they can't correct the price. However, this directly contradicts what I was EXPLICITLY told by the CSR - that I would receive my refund.

NOTE: The contact dates listed in the complaint form are approximate.

Desired Settlement: Refund
Settlement Explanation:
I expect to be refunded the amount originally promised, $54.24. It would be nice to get an apology for all of the runaround that they have put me through as well. I have stopped purchasing from them because of this incident, and I warn all of my family and friends to beware!

4x6 Envelopes

If you've ever wanted to mail a photo, you've probably had a hard time finding a "good" envelope. While normal "#10" envelopes will fit a 4x6 picture, there's a whole lot of room side to side. Plus, if you add more than a few pictures, the envelope doesn't close properly. I researched envelopes in the 4x6 size range, and had a lot of difficulty until I found what Staples calls #6 White Invitation Envelopes (#507771). Though expensive ($16.29 for 100), they're just about the right size (4.75 x 6.5). As an added bonus, they'll fit cards printed on 8.5 x 11 paper that you fold into quarters, which don't fit into #10 envelopes.

It turns out that the rest of the world seems to call the #6 envelopes "A6." Searching for A6 will provide lots of results, but nothing clearly cheaper (other than large volume purchases).

In doing my research, i also came across Free 4x6 Envelopes!, a page setup by Onizuka Design. They provide a template that you can print out, cut out, and glue to make your own envelopes. The only problem I encountered was that the envelope template is actually about 3x4.75. Remind me to never hire them to design anything for me.

Seller's Market

I got an email today stating "It's still a sellers market and buyers are anxious to act while interest rates are still low." Yeah, well, that's nice, but the thing is, in the home market, the vast majority of sellers are buyers, too. When a person sells his home, he usually needs to buy a new one. There are exceptions, of course. Real estate investors, who tend to own lots of homes, could sell a home without needing to buy a new one, but likely wouldn't, because they make they money on rent. It's pretty hard to rent out a home that you don't own anymore.

So the bottom line is that a seller's market is a bunch of baloney!

As promised, I'm letting you know that my experiment was a success! On or around June 25th, Google's bot must have revisited my site, and modified its ranking. My page is now #1!

Going Full Circle

Waaaaay back in 1995, I worked for a small startup called InfoSeek. They were developing a way to access the growing amount of information available on the internet. To do this, they created a search engine, and were the first to do so, I believe. (This was so long ago that they actually charged to do searches, and also offered a free version of the search.) As a summer intern, my job entailed two activities:
1) Searching the web for sites that linked search engines other than InfoSeek, and asking/suggesting that they add InfoSeek as an option.
2) Perusing Usenet for posts about finding information on the web, and responding with suggestions to use InfoSeek (and giving an example of how easily the information could be found).*

So, imagine my surprise when I was on the receiving end of a direct marketing attempt nearly identical to the one I used back in 1995. See below for the email I received. It was sent from a company that does book price comparisons, and they want to be listed on my site, too. I took a quick look at their interface, and I wasn't too impressed. Their comparison table doesn't show shipping/tax, but they do list the lowest "Buy It Now" price from eBay. I haven't decided whether to add them or not. Let me know your thoughts.

*In response to one of my posts, I was flamed. I informed my boss (due to the negative publicity to which InfoSeek was being subjected, and she ended up discovering that a relative of hers was a friend of the flamer.

Canon A75 @ $149.99

As I was about to leave work yesterday, I decided that I should take a last minute look at FW. One of the threads that caught my eye was Canon A75 $150 at CC b&m. I took a quick look (it had only been posted half an hour earlier), and decided it was worth a stop at CC on the way home. There were three drawbacks:
1) There was some indication that it might have been a special 5-hour sale in the morning.
2) The online price was 249.99.
2) It could be OOS.

With deals like these, it's generally not worth calling, as even if there is stock, when the employees hear about the price, the usually grab the remaining stock for themselves.

Since the OP referenced getting the deal from Slickdeals, I found the original thread, read it as well, found a scan of a receipt, and felt a bit more confident about the deal.

When I stopped at CC on the way home, I had to consciously stop myself from running through the parking lot. When I entered the store, I knew exactly where the digital camera section was, because of the Merkury battery deal. I circled the camera display like a vulture around its prey, found the A75, only to discover a $249.99 price tag. I asked a salesman nearby to check the price, since a "friend" had bought one earlier that day for $149.99. In fact, I told the salesman, I had a copy of his receipt. He expressed surprise that the price could possibly be that "low," but did proceed to check the price. When the computer showed the $149.99 price, he remained shocked, and confirmed the price with his co-worker. She confirmed, and then looked at me and, with a smile, said "You get the last one!"

After I checked out, I figured it wouldn't hurt to try a PM at Staples (next door). Though they didn't stock it in-store, they carry it in their catalog/on-line, so they pursued the PM, but when they called CC, they were told it was a "clearance" price, so they rejected the PM.

Throughout the evening I checked into FW to see the latest news about the thread. While virtually nobody had any success with PMing to other stores, there were a number of people who were able to order the camera through CC at the $149.99 price. At 6:25 this morning, it was reported on FW that the $149.99 price was showing up on CC's website. I tried a phone PM with Staples, and failed, because at checkout the CC website would change from reporting that the camera was in-stock to OOS.

The funny thing is that I don't really need this camera. The A75 is nearly identical to the camera that I have, an A70. I only bought it because I could, and I figured I could either re-sell it to a friend or on eBay.

UPDATE: The latest news (as posted on Slickdeals) is that "It is DEFINITELY a Price MISTAKE. Corporate has begun changing the price of $149, not back to $249, but to $279 on their National Price Database. Some have confirmed that although half of the CC's carry the $149 Price Tag, some A75's are ringing up AT check out to be $279. Because of the price discrepancy, CC will not honor the $149 but instead explain it was a "mistake" and that they can only sell it for what seems to be the new outrageous price of $279."

Linkage 2

As I previously noted, my post regarding Buy.com's phone number is quite popular. In fact, it used to be one of the most popular. However, I recently noticed a substantial decline in the number of hits that page was getting. So I performed some quick searches on Google and realized that my post is not showing up in the top 10 results, as it used to. As an experiment, I decided to see whether linking to the post from all of the places in my blog that I reference Buy.com would help. I'll let you know if I notice a difference.

Last OM Purchase?

Yesterday, I made what will probably be my last OM purchase.

Why? Because OM Sucks!

I had a MaxPerks giftcard valued at a few dollars, from my OM purchases last quarter. I was in the area, so I stopped by OM to spend it, and nothing more. I ended up buying a couple notebooks, and a package of M&Ms - I needed the UPC for a free shirt offer I found in an advertisement circular last week. Final total involved me paying $.37, which I was OK with.

New Logo

I've added a new logo. I don't think I'll be replacing the $uperman background logo anytime soon, but the new addition does go well with my current nickname, FatWallach.

Cheap Photo Printer

I took advantage of a nice photo printer deal at OD for a co-worker. They have the HP Photosmart 7660 Color Photo Printer (#944875) for $128.72. I used a $20 off $100 coupon, #21271437, so the pre-tax subtotal was 108.72. With tax, the total was $118.10. The real deal is with the 2 available rebates:
$50 from OD
$20 from HP

Final cost: $48.10

Staples Loves Me 2

Staples loves me, but I can't love them back. Today, I realized that the day of the "power lunch" is a day I won't have a car at work, so I won't be able to make use of the $15 off $15. Oh well.

Staples 99¢ Sale 2

The four packages from my first order came last week, and everyone was very pleased with their items. Some co-workers who had not been around when I placed the original order were interested in ordering, so I placed a second order, which arrived yesterday. I got another request for more goodies yesterday, so I'll be placing another order shortly.

Meanwhile, in discussions with Lippy, we calculated that for $43.02 (including tax), one could own 1,000,000 (one million!) staples! While a supply that large would be virtually impossible to use up, when else does one have the opportunity to own one million of anything? Lippy has yet to decide whether to go for it, however.

Staples Loves Me

Despite all the abuse I pour forth onto Staples, they love me. So much so that they invited me to a power lunch. In addition to lunch, in exchange for attending, they are giving out $15 off $15 coupons, valid for same day purchases. However, the back of the invitation seems to be the $15 coupon, so it's not clear whether it needs to be validated or will work without attending. It's only 2 hours, could be interesting, so maybe I'll attend.
