Comparison Sites

Though I have a bunch of Price Comparison sites on the left bar, I figured I'd post this lengthy list for your use and mine. I may update it from time to time, or I may not. I created this list from a list on FW. To convert the FW links to normal HTML links, I wrote a handy Excel formula:
=CONCATENATE("<a href=""",LEFT(RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-FIND("]",A1)),FIND("[",RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-FIND("]",A1)))-1),""">",RIGHT(LEFT(A1,FIND("]",A1)-1),LEN(LEFT(A1,FIND("]",A1)-1))-3),"</a>")

DSW Lawsuit in the Making

I was in DSW yesterday, and decided to try on a pair of shoes. I took the right shoe out of the box, inserted my foot, and encountered a sharp tack (probably from their anti-theft gizmos). It hurt! A lot! Though I didn't really break skin (no bleeding), it did leave a red mark. I went to complain to the management, and they took a report (including a picture of my foot) and gave me a coupon for 20% off my next purchase, which had an expiration of 12/31/03! Great, a 4-day coupon! I laughed at the guy, so he crossed that part out.

It seems I can walk OK today, so I probably won't sue.

Saving on Taxes 5

I've pulled off yet another PM! At this point, it's getting ridiculous. BestBuy advertised a free mouse with the purchase of TaxCut (a deal that is valid both instore and online. Since Staples carries the same mouse, their policy is written such that they should do the PM. Specifically, it states, "If another company offers a product that comes with a free or discounted item and Staples does not carry the free or discounted item, we will only match the price you pay at the point of purchase and will not take the free or discounted item into account." Since Staples does carry the same mouse, they should provide it.

The first CSR I dealt with absolutely refused, calling my interpretation of the policy incorrect. Had she refused because of the coupon I used, or because of the PM I already did, I would accept that. But I did not accept her interpretation of the policy. So I called another CSR, who basically said the same thing. However, when I read the policy with emphasis and explanation, he agreed to pursue it. He put me on hold, then returned to the line, said "Thank you for waiting, Sir-" and was cut off. I called another CSR who also disagreed with me right off the bat, but after an explanation also agreed to pursue it. He came back apologizing for his misinterpretation, stated that the other CSR(s) were wrong (in their interpretation of the policy), and that he had done the PM. The manner in which he did it was interesting - he bumped Staples price from $19.99 to $20.00, then applied a $20 coupon. It should be delivered tomorrow by UPS.

UPDATE: As per Reader Daniel's request, the "up till now" tally is $23.72* in cash, plus the following items:
-TaxCut Deluxe
-12 Sheet Strip Cut Shredder
-MS Money Deluxe 2004
-Deduction Pro
-Palm III/VII Stylus 3-pack
-MS Optical Wheel Mouse
-TaxCut State (To Be Obtained FAR)
*Plus the potential overpayment of rebate(s)

Digital Camera Accessory Kit 4

Well, the kit that was delivered last week made it's way to my office this morning. The other one is showing as "Delivered" on ups.com, so I may indeed get both today. The kit is OK - it's got a fair amount of junk. The only item of particular interest was the mini-tripod.

UPDATE: The second kit arrived. It seems to have been squished in transit, but otherwise alright.

UPDATE 2: I'd also like to point out that Staples fixed their "mistake" in their calculations for these two purchases. They credited me $0.01 for each order! It seems the $0.18 charge was for the envelopes alone (without the kit and coupon), then the kit and coupon were "billed" together - at a net of -$0.01. It's because of things like this that my CC bill shows 14+ Staples transactions this month alone!

Merkury

Last week there was a thread on FW, saying Circuit City had a Merkury brand digital camera starter kit for FAR ($10). I tried ordering online, but they were OOS, then I tried in-store pickup in several local stores, but they, too, all showed OOS. Last night I checked again, and they it was not available for shipment or in-store pickup, the system showed that it was in stock in 1 nearby store. I called them this morning before they opened, and they confirmed that they had 1, but weren't allowed to hold it (or anything). After some discussion, the CSR offered to hold it for me, if I would get there shortly after they opened.

And he did! The kit contained 4 (four) 1800 mAh AA batteries (the primary purpose of getting the kit), a (not-so-good) charger, a camera case, and some cleaning stuff.

In Other News...

I became a "Senior Member 1K" today at FW!

Digital Camera Accessory Kit 3

I checked the status of my Staples orders, and they're both showing shipped. Since I knew they were shipping via UPS, I went to their track by reference page. I entered the Staples order number, and the system was able to show me 2 packages, presumably the kit from each order. The weird thing was that one had a destination of Bronx, NY, the other New York, NY.

Checking back later, I found that UPS discovered their mistake - the status of the New York bound package was listed as "Exception: ROUTED INCORRECTLY AT UPS FACILITY;PKG HAS BEEN REROUTED TO DESTINATION." It is still scheduled for delivery today, but I'll let you know when it arrives.

The other package was delivered, so I went to our mailroom to pick it up, and they informed me that they're so behind that I'll have to wait until Monday!

Staples Delivers

Well, I was the lucky recipient of 4 items from Staples today:
>$5 GC from the "FAR" CF
>$5 GC from the Staples complaint call
>Padded envelope in a cardboard box with packing material from the Digital Camera Accessory Kit order #1
>Padded envelope in a cardboard box with packing material from the Digital Camera Accessory Kit order #2

Saving on Taxes 4

Well, it seems I found a way to make another $10 on my TaxCut/MS-Money purchase. The MS-Money has a postcard in it for a free subscription to Money Magazine. In very small print at the bottom, it says, "If you do not wish to receive the magazine subscription, you can obtain a $10 refund by completing this card (originals only-no copies) and sending it, along with the original Microsoft Money sales receipt and original cover from the enclosed booklet, within 30 days of purchase to the following address...." Though I did find some mention of this on FW, I felt it deserved its own thread.

My total profit on this order is now $23.72!

Digital Camera Accessory Kit 2

Well, so far, the mailers have shipped, and Staples system can't calculate:
$29.98 (Item #520727)
+ $0.17 (Item #524090)
------------------------------
$30.15
- $29.99 (Coupon #29657)
+ $0.01 (tax)
------------------------------
$0.17 (Total)

However, Staples lists the total as $0.18.

Schwartz v. Citibank (South Dakota), N.A., Universal Bank, N.A. and Universal Financial Corp.

I don't know anything about the case*, but I was "identified as a member of the class," so I got a check for $0.12! Not quite as profitable as some of my other class action participation, but $0.12 never hurt anyone! (It will take only 185 years for it to be worth $1,000, assuming a 5% rate of return!)

While writing this post, I decided to look into it a bit, and found out the following:

Schwartz Settlement
The case involving Citigroup, Schwartz v. Citibank (South Dakota) N.A., focused on Citibank (South Dakota)’s requirement that card payments be received by 10:00 a.m. in order to be credited as of that day. Citigroup's Cards business also agreed as part of a settlement to move its cut-off time from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Cards business agreed to create a settlement fund of $18 million, most of which will be distributed automatically to cardholders and to make a cash payment of approximately $9 million for attorneys fees and costs. In addition, the Cards business agreed to provide educational mailings to its credit card customers and post information on its Internet website regarding the methods by which customers can pay their statements. The Cards business values the change in cut-off time, as well as the educational mailings and internet education sites, at approximately $18 million. As noted above, the issues raised by the litigation have been satisfactorily resolved and concerned only a small part of Citigroup’s Cards business.

Digital Camera Accessory Kit

A FW post alerted me to a Digital Camera Accessory Kit (#520727) at Staples for $29.98, which combined with any purchase (such as the $0.17 Manco Jiffy® Ungummed Padded Mailing Bag, 4 7/8" x 8 3/4" (#524090) and a coupon (#29657), was free! I quickly ordered, but forgot FatCash, so I ordered again, with FatCash, then realized there was no reason to cancel the first order. It turns out that within 11 minutes of being posted on FW, it was OOS!

Target GC Discount 3

The saga continues. It seems that despite receiving cancellation emails (and no charge to their credit cards) many FWers are still getting WORKING GCs from Target.... I personally didn't get mine (yet?), but it would be nice.

JumpStart Typing 2003

Now that I'm known as the ultimate low-price shopper in the family, I get calls from relatives seeking deals on things. My mother wanted to get JumpStart Typing for my nephew, and asked me to look into it. I found it at $19.99 at Staples and $9.99 at BestBuy. I called Staples to do a PM, and after being on hold for a loooooong time, they told me that $9.99 is "way below our cost," so the PM needs to be approved by Corporate. Yay. So I may wait till this afternoon to save $1 and get slightly faster shipping. Fun. At least I'll get the Business Rewards points. :)

UPDATE: Staples called back, and did the PM! Final cost was under $10, including tax.

General Update

Staples actually showed up to pick up the Microsoft Money Standard today.

My recent order from OM was delivered in 3 parts, 2 of which by FedEx.

I placed some more OM orders. The first was for 2 sets of FAR photo paper. The second was for a FAR CF Reader and a FAR Scoth Pop-up Tape Dispenser. The price was showing up wrong for the former online, so I tried to call in the order, but they wanted to charge me shipping. They transferred me to the website division, who told me I had to order online to get the free shipping, then call up 30 minutes later for a price adjustment. At least I may get FatCash this way. The only problem is that when I finally placed the order online, the system reported:
GenericTable data not found
There was an error while processing your order. Please try again.

Order History reports:
We're sorry. We were unable to retrieve your order information.

We'll just have to wait and see.

With these OM orders, my RebateMeter broke the $3,000 mark!

It's starting to get old posting about all the different countries that have people finding/reading my blog. One person, from a repeat country (Spain), was searching for:
-españa=mucho calor (2)
-españa=mucho calor t shirt (1)

The shirt which this person sought was one I saw in Spain, but didn't buy. Some artist came up with the idea of playing off the famous formula "E=mc^2" by defining it as an abbreviation for España = Mucho Calor (Spain = Very Hot), and printing it on a T-shirt. For some odd reason, this shirt was not sold at most souvenir shops, so those that did stock it priced it high and wouldn't budge. As cute (read: nerdy) as it was, I balked at the thought of spending $20 for a T-shirt!

Back to the off-topic topic at hand, the weirdest place my blog has shown up is Froogle (6), which indicates that I'm selling the printing calculator for $15.

Staples Calls 2

I called regular Staples CS today, because the courier still hasn't shown up to pick up my Microsoft Money 2004 Standard. When I called to arrange the pickup, they said it could take up to 5 business days for the courier to show. But before the end of the call, the CSR told me the courier would be coming Tuesday.

So I told all of this to today's CSR, who put me on hold for a fair amount of time while reading the notes on the order. He then told me there was no way for them to know when the courier was coming, apologized that the prior CSR had told me a specific day, and is sending me a $5 GC for my troubles.

I haven't heard back from Karen, so if I have a chance, I may give her a call tomorrow.

Target GC Discount 2

I'm sad to report that I got the dreaded email from Target (see below) regarding my GC order. The only thing that annoys me is that a fair number of FWers report that theirs shipped! (There were, however, plenty of others whose orders were canceled.)

Greetings from target.direct, your direct link to target.com, fields.com and mervyns.com.

We appreciate your recent visit to our Web site to take advantage of one of our promotional offers. While the promotion clearly states that this offer is not valid on GiftCards, due to a technical error, your GiftCard order was submitted although it did not meet the restrictions of the promotional offer.

Therefore, we have canceled this order. We regret that we will not be able to send you the GiftCard(s) you ordered. We are very sorry for this inconvenience. You are welcome to return to our Web site to order GiftCards using a credit card or store card as payment.

Thank you for being our valued guest. Please visit us again soon.

Bad CSS News?

Someone at FW posted that "I believe the Cashbuilder Platinum is not elligible, i have signed up and got 2 claims in, but now they said it was a mistake and that only the Platinum is elligible." Bad news, if it's true. Not that bad, I guess. I'll just have to switch cards.

Additionally, the administrator of the plan has been mucking with the rules, but claiming that they're just enforcing rules that have always exist; that they've been lax on in the past.

Say Hello to My Little Friend

Another Target GC

While my other Target GC may well come (or might not ... it hasn't shipped yet), I have chosen to embark on a new offer. Some place called American Homeowners Association offered me a $25 Target GC for trying out their program for 30 days, with a "processing fee" of $1.95. While most people would never sign up for what is basically a scam to get people to forget to cancel and get charged the annual fee of $10.75 for the first year, followed by $129(!) for each additional year. I have a couple things going for me though. First, I'm careful about cancelling. Second, I used a temporary CC number, with an expiration of 2/04, and a credit limit of $2. 92% off sale, here I come!

Target GC Discount

There's been some talk of stackable coupons (TDMWDEALPAS2, TDMWEMTHANKS, TDWELCME2224 [doesn't always work], TC3AMEXSAVES [only if you have amex]) at Target.com over the last few days at FW. Someone figured out that you could combine 2-3 of them for a $100 GC, and get the GC for $71.95 or $81.95 (including S&H). Of course I went through ebates (FatCash isn't available for Target), so I'll be getting an extra 4% off.

Needless to say, I'm in. It's expected to ship today, so this could turn out well!

FAR @ OM

Back in the day, I placed nearly weekly orders with OfficeMax. Most of the time virtually all of the items in my orders were FAR, so I'd often make a profit by using a coupon. There were a number of FAR items, but not enough of them interested me enough to put together a $125 order, so instead I just ordered a few things:
-Gigafast 5-Port Switch (20690398)
-Mega Systems 10-Pack Kick-Out Cases (20678385)
-GE 4-Function Universal Remote Control (20670882)

The first two items were found through an FW thread.

Free Blockbuster Rental

I signed up for their mailing list, so I'll be getting a free rental coupon within a few days.

Staples Calls

I tried to call Sandy Santiago, the supervisor of Winston Hercules (the evil Staples manager). However, she was off today.

So I called Staples' Executive Customer Service, but the number didn't work.

So I called the regular Staples' CS line, and they transferred me to Karen.

I explained the scenario, and she took down all the information and told me that a formal complaint would be filed, and it would be sent to both the store manager and field manager.

They will be contacting me within a couple days with more information. I'm surprised they didn't offer to buy back my love, but maybe that will come with the callback.

This episode wasn't nearly as exciting as I had hoped it would be.

UPDATE: After hanging up, I remembered some more information - specifically that I had asked to use a phone to call Staples CS, and the manager wouldn't let me. I called back (had to go through regular Staples CS) to let Karen know.

Saving on Taxes 3

It's becoming quite the saga, but a new chapter has unfolded in the TaxCut software story. I didn't mention it before, but when I got the Microsoft Money software I noticed that the round, clear sticker that served as the seal had been broken, only to be covered by another one. While it may have been done in the factory or somewhere else along the pre-customer route, I wasn't particularly pleased. I called up Staples, who offered to come pick it up and exchange it with another, or I could go to a store to do the exchange myself. Because I get my deliveries at work, and I usually don't have contact with the Staples courier, I figured it'd just be easier to go to Staples myself (especially considering that I had other errands to run in the same shopping center).

I finally got around to going today (in the snow, no less). I brought the software up to the CS desk, explained the story to the clerk, who called over another clerk/assistant manager. He didn't want to authorize it himself, so he went to speak to the manager. He reported that they would not accept "open" software for exchange (in direct violation of the Staples Return Policy, which states, "Software: We’ll gladly exchange opened software for the same title.") So after arguing with him for several minutes, I took his name, his boss's name and number, and I'll have a nice chat tomorrow. (You'll, of course, be able to read about it here.)

I proceed to look around the store to see if there were any deals to be had. I found a package of 10 rolls of receipt paper for $.50. While I have no need for such products, I figured it would be good for my MIL and her calculator. There were also a couple of FAR items - Post-its and a calculator. As I was about to check out, I noticed that the Microsoft Money Deluxe was (still) marked at $39.94, instead of the regular price of $59.99. So I picked up a copy and went to checkout.

Everything rang up smoothly except for the MS Money - it was showing up in the system at the "right" price of $59.99. The clerk called for a price check, and the assistant manager with whom I had dealt earlier did the check, and found that I was right - it was labeled at $39.94. The clerk proceeded to do a price override. At this point I handed over my Customer Appreciation Days coupon (12% off). The clerk proceeded to enter a 12% price correction for each item. At the end, she told me the total, and it seemed high, so I took a close look at the screen, and discovered the problem. With two price corrections on the MS Money, the system first applied the 12% to the $59.99 price (bringing it down to $52.79), then did the correction to $39.94, automatically calculating the difference ($12.85), producing a final cost of $39.94. I pointed this out to the clerk, who actually caught on surprisingly quick. She then tried to trick the system by entering the $39.94 price override first, then the 12%, but the system still did the same thing. After a few more futile attempts, she called for the manager.

The actual store manager (whom I had argued with earlier) came over and assessed the situation. He quickly stated that that was how their system worked, and it couldn't be overridden. I started to suggest that it could be solved by manually calculating the 12% off of the $39.94 ($35.15), and entering that as the price override. I was even in the process of offering to do the calculations myself, if they would just give me a pen and paper, but he cut me off with the line, "When did you ever work for Staples." Gee, I never did, but I can still tell you how to solve this customer service problem. I proceeded to chastise him for cutting me off, then explained my solution in full. He sort of shrugged and told the clerk to go ahead and do that, then disappeared. As she was finishing things up, I commented to the clerk, "Man, is he in a bad mood today," to which she responded, "No, he's always like that." The clerk finalized my order, I paid, and left with a partial smile.

So much for Staples showing any "Customer Appreciation."

When I returned home, I checked FW and happened to find a thread discussing that the shredder that I had bought as part of this TaxCut bundle was online for $9.94 (with a $10 MIR), $10 less than when I bought it ($19.94 with a $20 MIR). I called to PM, and will be getting $10.86 (including tax) credited, for a new profit total on the tax bundle of $13.72 (which may rise if the rebate on Money Deluxe is overpaid)! I even posted a thread of FW to share the deal/news.

I also called Staples to complain about the misleading information I had been given (that it would be no problem to do the exchange in-store), and to arrange for a pickup of the software. Now that I have Money Deluxe, I simply wanted to return Money Standard, and arranging it was no problem. I was also given a special number for Executive Customer Service. (You'll read about this call, too!)

The whole point of getting Money Deluxe for under $40 is that it comes with a rebate for up to $40 off (with a TaxCut purchase). At the normal price ($59.99), it's not worth it, but for free, why not. Plus, there's a chance the rebate center will pay $40 (or $39.94), leading to an even greater profit!

Cheapo Flasho 5-0

Despite Staples cancelling the CF, I didn't want to lose out entirely. So I called up to complain, and the CSR is sending me a $5 GC to make up for the $5 coupon that I lost out on.

I guess at this point it would not be right to return the part of the order they shipped.

December 11, 2003

Not That I Need It, But...

From the Not that I need it, but it's free category, today's mail brought a Beck's cap and a meat thermometer. Weird thing is, I just sent away for another meat thermometer!

Cheapo Flasho NoGo

About a week ago, I ordered 64 MB of CF from Staples, taking slight advantage of a poorly designed promotion. Sadly, Staples caught on, and instead of the sending the CF, they sent the following:
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, but we are unable to fulfill your order for item 554546 - 64M PREMIUM COMPACTFLASH. The item was advertised as "free" after combined savings only if purchased in combination with one of six digital cameras. Because you did not purchase one of the cameras, we cannot accept the $14.99 price and rebate offer. If you are still interested in this item, you may purchase it at the regular price of $39.99 with a $15 Mail-in-Rebate offer which expires on 12/31/03. To order, please contact us at 1-800-3STAPLE.

One of the reasons they may have caught on was the thread I posted on FW, which as of this post, had over 6,000 views.

I'm now not sure whether to return the stuff I threw into the order (which would've been free after coupon, but now isn't). I probably will.

On the plus side of things, my (free) palm styli shipped.

Slooooooooooow Rebates

Rebates are normally scheduled to take about 2 months to be paid back to the buyer (e.g. 6-8 or 8-10 weeks). While there is no clear basis for this (how long does it take for a rebate company to open the mail, enter it into their system*, issue a check, and allow the USPS to deliver it?), it is accepted. However, sometimes rebates take much longer. Of my hundreds of rebates, I've only run into substantive trouble with a handful. Among them is a Sanford Accent Highlighter rebate for a measly $2.89. The first problem was the mailing address printed on the rebate form was wrong. So I (and everybody else) had to resend it. Now it's been over 4 months (purchase was back in July), and the rebate hasn't shown. On the plus side of things, the rebate status is showing as, "We have received and processed your submission. You should receive your rebate or premium item soon. Please check back again to receive the date your rebate or premium item was mailed." It's been saying this for quite some time, and I still don't have my check for $2.89!

I'm sending the rebate company an email today, and if I don't get my check soon, I'll contact my favorite OM rebate address, omxrebates@officemax.com!

*Many rebates can be submitted electronically, saving the rebate company lots of time and increasing efficiency (they don't have to try to read your handwriting or spend time typing your address info into their computer). While this method usually speeds things up a bit, most companies still aren't sending out rebates with the speed that they should. Rite Aid is an exception. Their Single Check program is quite efficient, and doesn't even require the UPCs to be mailed to them!

Class vs. Toshiba

The Microsoft - California Settlement wasn't the first time my Toshiba Satelite involved me in a class action lawsuit. Several years back (1999), Toshiba was sued for a faulty Floppy Disk Controller (FDC). Specifically, "a 'condition' in the floppy disk controller circuitry in Toshiba notebook PCs under certain circumstances can cause data loss or corruption to information stored on a floppy disk."

Because my computer was not too new, "all" I got was a Toshiba freecard, with a $225 value, because I chose the software patch. Had I chosen the hardware solution, I would have gotten a PCMCIA floppy controller, with an external floppy, but only $200. Between the restrictions, and the fact that there wasn't anything I really needed, so I waited a while, then settled on a scanner as the expiration date approached. I got a nice USB powered Canon LIDE scanner. Between the item's cost, shipping and/or tax, the total came to around $220, and I let the remaining $5 go to waste. (Any unclaimed amount from the settlement fund will be donated to a newly created charitable organization, the statement says.)

California vs. Microsoft

There's a certain satisfaction to be had when one fights the enemy - and wins. Everyone has a bit of David and Goliath in them. And in that spirit, I sent off my Microsoft - California Settlement Claim today. The settlement reached called for Microsoft to distribute up to $1.1 billion in vouchers that eligible consumers and businesses can redeem for cash after buying computers, peripheral computer hardware, or computer software made by any manufacturer.

As I bought a new computer (with Windows) when I lived in California in 1997, I am eligible for a $16 portion of the spoils. As I bought a new computer after July 18, 2003, I am eligible to receive cash instead of a voucher.

Score 1 for the little guy.

Saving on Taxes 2

Staples delivered all but the Palm styli today. While I PMed the TaxCut to Amazon last week, for some reason, I didn't think of doing the same with the other software I bought. So I called Staples again, and got a refund of $8.37 for my efforts! For those of you paying close attention, I have now gotten my whole order for -$2.86! That's right, I made money buying this whole bundle of software!

Well, Duh!

From the wonderful world of FW, I bring you a question:
The Taxcut Deluxe, does it include Federal already? I know I need both Federal and State....the Taxcut State is free after rebate with taxcut Deluxe...but does deluxe cover Federal tax??
In other words, Will I need to buy taxcut for federal again??

And the response (not mine):
What do you think it contains to start with?. If you know already Taxcut State is FAR, then there must be something in TC deluxe.
To answer your question, yes. It contains fedaral.
You don't need to buy TC federal again.

Saving on Taxes

The first step to saving on taxes is saving on tax software. Hence my Staples order last night. While I could have simply ordered TaxCut Deluxe for $24.95, with an available $5 rebate, I instead chose to get all the FAR stuff the Staples pushes on the buyer. In doing so, I built up an order substantive enough to permit the use of a coupon. So, I purchased:
-TaxCut Deluxe
-12 Sheet Strip Cut Shredder
-MS Money Standard 2004
-Deduction Pro
-Palm III/VII Stylus 3-pack

All for $7.86. The after tax savings (vs. buying TaxCut alone) through this mass-purchase is $7.09!

UPDATE: TaxCut State is free, too. I get to download it as soon as it's available.
UPDATE: Just got off the phone, and PMed to Amazon.com's price of $22.99, for a further savings of $2.35! ($24.95 - $22.99 = $1.96. $1.96 * 110% = $2.156. $2.16 * $1.08629 = 2.3463864. Yes, Staples rounded off after each calculation, costing them a penny.)

Not That I Need It, But...

Continuing in the category of Not that I need it, but it's free, UPS has been busy this week, delivering an apron and two pairs of glasses: one safety, and one shaded.

Pulling Staples

Last week, when I ordered the Canon calculator for my in-laws, Staples offered to send me the "free" extra ink cartridge by placing an order for it (and charging me for it), then immediately issuing a credit for the same amount. The cartridge (and all other parts of the order) have since been received, and all items charged - only the credit is outstanding. I called to find out what the deal was, and after the CSR went through all of the notes on all of my recent orders, she finally determined that no credit seems to have been issued, and spent a while trying to get authorization to credit me.

After being on hold for quite some time, the credit was issued. The only question is ... what do I do if the credit shows up twice?

OT: At Least it isn't Me

Imagine you're curious as to who the #1 "miserable failure" is. How would you go about determining it? Search Google - and check out the first listing. (Thanks Shaya)

Careful readers will note that neither "miserable" nor "failure" appears in the text of the bio. Clicking the "Cached" link shows that "These terms only appear in links pointing to this page: miserable failure."

OT: Like a Hot Deal...

Here's a rather amusing joke I got in an email...

John wakes up at home with a HUGE hangover. He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side table. He sits down and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. John looks around the room and sees that it is in a perfect order, spotless, clean. So is the rest of the house. He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the table. "Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to go shopping. Love you."

So, he goes to the kitchen and sure enough there is a hot breakfast and the morning newspaper. His son is also at the table, eating. John asks, "Son, what happened last night?"

His son says, "Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and delirious. Broke some furniture, puked in the hallway, and gave yourself a black eye when you stumbled into the door."

Confused, John asks, "So, why is everything in order and so clean and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?"

His son replies, "Oh that! Mom dragged you to the bedroom and when she tried to take your pants off you said ....

"Lady leave me alone ... I'm married!"

Lucky Target

I went to Target tonight, and in the spirit of FW, checked out the clearance stuff, and found a 21" piece of rolling luggage, originally $49.99. At the scanner it rang up as $0.00, and it turns out the last sale price (which they charged me) was $12.48.

OT: Mustard Packets

How do sealed mustard packets dry out? I pulled some mustard packets out of my desk drawer for my sandwich today, and I could hardly squeeze the mustard out of the packet. No, the packets weren't that old!

Please post your theories!

Cheapo Flasho

Staples has Edge 64MB CF for $14.94 with a $15 rebate. Staples wants customers to think that they need to be buying a camera, too, but the rebate form makes no mention of this. I threw in some random binder stuff I needed, bumping the order total up to $19.06, then used a $5 off $18.99 coupon, for a total of $15.28 including tax!

PS: I'm now up to over $100 in FatCash

OT: Small World

One of my friends got engaged to the sister-in-law of another friend. Another friend of mine also got engaged this past weekend.

Reminds me of the time I ran into my brother's wife's brother's wife's brother in YU. Weirder than his being there was that we knew each other.
